Functional Mushroom Fruiting Bags
Why Decarbonize the Mushroom Industry?
In the mid to late 20th century, commercial mushroom cultivation operations began adopting fruiting blocks. This shift allowed for more consistent production, reduced contamination risks, and increased yields compared to traditional methods. This innovation allowed for increased production and product quality. Substrate recipes have changed since but the making of the blocks has changed little. This includes the energy necessary to heat pasteurize the fruiting blocks

At KinokoTerra, we are redefining mushroom cultivation. Unlike traditional methods that rely on energy, and labour-intensive autoclaves, our process uses cold pasteurization. Each 2 kg fruiting block yields approximately 1.25 kg of harvestable mushrooms, offering exceptional productivity while minimizing environmental impact. By producing fruiting blocks locally, we also reduce reliance on imports from Europe and Asia, helping to eliminate the logistical bottlenecks often associated with maritime transport. The result is a moist, hyper-oxygenated substrate: An ideal environment for vigorous mycelium growth and reliable harvests.

Sustainability

Carbon Sequestration
Mycelium growth sequesters carbon
by transforming carbon-rich organic matter into stable forms in the substrate
Upcycling
Each bag is made from upcycled materials such as: hardwood sawdust, chips or pellets as well as soybean hulls and even straw pellets
Composting
Spent fruiting bags can be composted which will improve soil health, assist in decomposition of existing organic matter, improve water retention, suppress pathogens while improving soil microbiology and will continue to sequester stored carbon
Cold Pasteurization
Cold pasteurization eliminates harmful microbes without relying on high heat or harsh chemicals, significantly reducing energy consumption and toxic byproducts. By lowering resource use and minimizing environmental impact, it offers a more sustainable and eco-friendly alternative to traditional pasteurization methods.
Non-toxic Chemistry
Mushroom fruiting blocks rely on non-toxic chemistry, using natural substrates and safe sanitization methods instead of harmful chemical additives.
